OVAE Creates Website to Serve Community College Students

The Department of Education's Office of Vocational Adult Education (OVAE) has created a Web site to serve as a source of information and resources for the community college community. Information on funds appropriated to OVAE under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, as well as other funds allotted to OVAE, are posted on the site.

The site also includes exemplary community college programs, OVAE projects, Perkins and Adult Education legislative information, and transcripts of community college-related speeches delivered by Department officials.

  • Experience with advocacy in Massachusetts. The state went from $800,000 in state funding in 1983 to over $30 million (plus $10 million federal) today.

  • State-level committees that meet regularly to plan and conduct campaigns, and organize activities like postcard campaigns, meet-and-greets, state-house visits, and advocacy workshops at state conferences
  • A multi-year campaign model

Provided by the Illinois Community College Board, the Web site is a resource for adult education instructors and includes a statewide calendar of events.

Grant opportunities

Philanthropy News Digest, a service of the Foundation Center, offers information on new grants, who has received recent grants, and the chance to sign up for an e-mail newsletter.

Grants Alert.com lists grants by the type of entity providing the grant or by interest areas. An option to register for an e-mail update newsletter is also provided.

Fundsnet Services Online provides a fundraising and grant directory.

U.S. Department of Education is the source for information about the federal grants issued to the states.

Tech Soup is a good source for learning about non/low cost technology software and hardware for nonprofits.

GuideStar is a site that requires free registration. It not only offers ideas and information about grants, but also allows for the creation of an organizational profile to use when approaching funders.

The Federal Register provides information on all current government grants arranged by governmental department. For those relating to education, scroll down to the Education Department heading.

Service Center Network

Center for Adult Learning Leadership (CALL) is one of the four centers within the Illinois Service Center Network. The network provides staff development opportunities for Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) funded programs and works in collaboration with Illinois education and human service agencies.

Other centers within the network include:

  • Adult Learning Resource Center (ALRC)
    Serving Regions 1 and 2, the ALRC provides expert professional development for adult education and family literacy educators. Whether providing training for instructional or program development, the ALRC utilizes content expertise and current research to deliver high quality services to individuals, programs, and state networks.
  • Central Illinois Adult Education Service Center (CIAESC)
    Serving Region 3, the CIAESC delivers staff development to community college and public school adult education programs, community-based organizations, Evenstart, ESL, family literacy programs, regional offices of education, Department of Corrections Education programs, and other entities related to adult education.
  • Southern Illinois Professional Development Center (SIPDC)
    Serving Region 4, the SIPDC is the support system for adult basic education programs and literacy projects in the southern third of Illinois.  It provides professional/staff development services to enhance the effectiveness of those serving adult learners.
